The Pat McAfee Show fell victim to a cleverly crafted AI-generated photo, highlighting the growing challenge of discerning truth from fiction in the digital age! It’s becoming increasingly crucial to pause and verify information encountered on social media, as the online world is now awash with deceptive content, including fake profiles, automated bots, and sophisticated AI creations that can easily infiltrate our feeds.
While many of these fabricated pieces are quite obvious, it’s surprisingly easy for misinformation to slip through the cracks if we’re not paying close enough attention. This very scenario seems to have unfolded on Monday when The Pat McAfee Show inadvertently aired an AI-altered image featuring brothers Sonny and Lorenzo Styles. The show's team was discussing the impressive performances of Ohio State safety Lorenzo Styles Jr. and his younger brother, Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles, at the NFL Combine over the weekend. Following their 40-yard dash times, a photograph of them alongside their father, former Ohio State linebacker Lorenzo Styles Sr., was displayed.
But here's where it gets controversial... In the presented image, Lorenzo Sr. appeared to be an imposing figure, towering over his sons, both of whom stand well over six feet tall. The on-air personalities were astounded by the elder Styles' sheer size, remarking on how massive he seemed. The visual indeed portrayed him as a veritable giant.
And this is the part most people miss... Unfortunately, this striking image was not authentic. The genuine photograph originates from a 2023 article in the Ohio State Alumni Magazine. In that authentic picture, Lorenzo Styles Sr. is still a considerable presence, but his stature is presented much more realistically. He stands at 6'1", the same height as Sonny, and is four inches shorter than Lorenzo Jr.
It remains somewhat unclear how the AI-enhanced version of the photo found its way to McAfee's show. However, it’s suspected that it may have originated from the X account of Adam Ferrell, an individual known for creating and disseminating fabricated sports news to gain viral attention. Ferrell's account posted the AI-manipulated image on Saturday.
Following the display of the doctored photo, McAfee proceeded to discuss a tweet he had seen over the weekend concerning the Styles family, about which he expressed some hesitation regarding its permissibility to share. It's not entirely clear if this tweet was related to the Adam Ferrell post or something else entirely. Therefore, it's a possibility that McAfee's show was aware the image was AI-generated and shared it for humorous effect. Nevertheless, whether intentional or not, featuring AI-generated images on a prominent platform like this is rather disappointing.
